Not A Usual Sight To See

U.S. Airways flight 1549 also known as the "Miracle on the Hudson" is hauled on a truck through the streets in Elizabeth, New Jersey, June 4, 2011. REUTERS/Gary Hershorn
This is the 'Miracle on the Hudson' plane which we had the privilege of seeing as it made its way through the Charlotte, NC streets on its way to the Carolinas Aviation Museum.  We were leaving Charlotte headed home and had no idea that this was happening.  We first spotted the helicopters hovering above - which I naturally assumed they were recording a traffic jam (which we were in) or recording a police chase (which we saw several parked policed cars just waiting.)  All of sudden, I look up at an overpass and what do I see? Yes!  You are right - the Miracle on the Hudson plane beginning to go across the bridge.  It was quite exciting as we watched (as much as one can watch speeding by in a car at 50 mph!!)  I would have taken a picture but this one was much better! People were standing on the road watching, many had parked their cars to watch, it was a sight to behold.

As you remember, all 155 passengers and crew survived the incident that made pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger an American hero for his quick-thinking decision to land in the river when the airplane struck a flock of birds just after take-off from New York's LaGuardia airport and lost power in both engines.

I could talk about our few days in Concord letting the boys ride race cars and just relaxing, but I thought this was a much more exciting story!

  7. Susan...we got to see it too! We were heading home from Myrtle Beach late Thursday evening. It was parked at a weigh station off of Interstate 77.We were heading north and the plane was parked in the weigh station area heading south. We saw the crowds and cars parked on the side of the interstate before we saw the plane.Didn't have my camera ready and we weren't aware that we would even be passing by it.The plane was parked here in our area at the West Virginia Welcome Center off of I-77 over night.Daughter Karen got to see it and took a picture with her cell phone camera and sent it to me.Then not too many hours later we got to see it.How awesome that you went to Concord. We have been there.Want to go back to that area sometime and go to some of the NASCAR shops.Did you go to Concord Mills? That place is huge.
